Afraid of ME
‘Afraid of ME’ by Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen was originally created for VIVAAR Venezia performance in public space during the Venice Biennale 2024 and repurposed for CHART 2024.
For the Performance Programme at CHART 2024, Rasmussen performed ‘Afraid of ME’. In this performance, the audience will encounter a middle-aged woman, all dressed up and supposedly from the art industry, standing with handwritten signs in public space around Charlottenborg. The sentences are direct, some quite personal, though open for interpretation. Distancing herself from the art fair, she is trying to catch attention, while sending out mixed signals and creating an awkward situation….

Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (b. 1970, Manila, Philippines) is an artist based in Copenhagen whose practice is rooted in performance and extends across video, photography, sculpture and installation. Working with the body, scripted texts, music, song and elaborate costumes, she creates works that move between the personal and the political. Her practice explores identity, culture, religion, gender and social relations, often combining critical perspectives with humour and play. Cuenca Rasmussen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and has exhibited internationally. Her work is held in collections including ARoS, the National Gallery of Denmark, KIASMA and Malmö Art Museum.
